Chapter 4, 5, &6

I have learned a lot about diets and healthy eating as well as the affects not eating healthy can cause. There are so many ways to change our daily eating habits to have excuses. everyone has things going on in their lives, I know I do as well, but instead of going too fast food place to get a hamburger, fry, and soda, stop at a close store and grab a wheat sub and a bottle of water. When out for dinner eat about half and take the rest home 90% of food places give you a bigger portion then needed. Shop healthier there are many ways to find out the healthy foods to buy. I have learned that going a long period of time eating poorly can cause many health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, tiredness, weakness, and so many more.

Physical activity is essential in everyone’s daily life. People have to have some kind of physical activity everyday to maintain good health. Now a day’s machines and technology itself has taken place of people. People used to work morning till night, doing everything for themselves in which they had plenty of exercise. The life span of people long ago was greater than it is now. People have gotten lazy and rely too much on technology to do for them. There are many ways to get the exercise that your body requires. But simply walking 30 minutes a couple times a week along with basic house work can be just enough. Physical activity is anything you do when not sitting or standing.

The food pyramid helped me see what is important in a daily diet as well as learning all the meanings or the labels and ingredients on food and drinks. I came across a site that has a portion plate and it explains how its used for easy portioning with your dinners and all meals, I think this is great and I will be trying this out. https://classes.lt.unt.edu/Spring_2011/LTEC_3260_020/blo0016/assignment_1/page_2.html

I learned in discussion a lot about child obesity and much prevention. I also learned about the importance of physical activity in schools and how that program can be as well as being the beginning of a active life style for children.

I believe I have been doing great in discussions, I believe I have been relevant and put a lot of thought into what I write.

Words I have learned amino acids, purging, probiotics

Chapter 7 &8

Chapter 7 and 8 were very informative and I believe I learned quite a few things. I learned about drugs I didn’t even know existed, like GHB and Katamine (club drugs). Drug use is very dangerous weather ingested, injected or inhaled, no matter what way you take a drug it’s dangerous. It is important to know what you’re putting in your body and know what kind of interactions it can have, especially when taken with other medications and or alcohol, there is also always side effects, so to watch for them is also important. Many people abuse prescription drugs. It’s a very common thing these days, yet very bad, people don’t understand what they’re doing to themselves. Abusing drugs can cause not only bad health problems and or death but drugs are very addicting. For someone addicted to drugs life can just get very hard, they literally cannot function without them and when trying to get off these kinds of drugs with draw alone is horrible and dangerous. People need to really think before taking medications or illegal drugs before they ruin their lives. Drugs have many effects on the body short term and long term and once you damage your organs or brain you can’t take back what you did (chapter 7).

I learned about alcohol and tobacco and the effects, ingredients in cigarettes and the types of tobacco as well as long term and short term effects that can ultimately ruin your life. I learned about binge drinking along with how college student increasingly binge drink by drink a lot of alcohol in a short amount of time and I learned of the many treatments for alcoholics. There are 5 steps to quitting a tobacco habit and using the letters START can be the beginning of the process (chapter 8).

In discussion I learned about the reasons alcohol and tobacco will probably never be band, due to the state and federal taxes. The amount of money made on these is more important than people’s health. I learned of the many chemicals in tobacco/cigarettes and the effects each chemical can have on a person. Below are two sites I found useful.

I have learned a few words in these chapters including psychoactive, ethanol, carcinogenic and dopamine

Chapters 1, 2 &3

Within chapter 1 I have learned many things. I have learned the meaning of health. Health is Being free from symptoms of disease and pain as much as possible and a state of physical, mental, and social well being .I have learned of the illness-wellness continuum which can place a person anywhere between perfect health and death at anytime depending on if you’re sick or not. I have also learned of the dimensions of health which is basically different kinds of health, these include physical, intellectual, psychological, social, spiritual, environmental and occupational. I found this very interesting because I never realized health came in so many forms. A big thing I have learned in chapter one is that choice is the biggest part of health, it’s important to make the right choices to be at your best in every way. (chapter1)

Chapter 2 focused on psychological health, I have learned what psychological health is and its characteristics, such as realism, self-esteem, optimism, autonomy and assertiveness, communication and intimacy, emotional intelligence, spirituality, and prioritizing needs. Again this is something I never knew and was interesting to learn have learned of the many mental issues that can occur. I now know that stress can affect your well being, along with depression, anxiety, panic etc. I also have read on ways to reduce stress, anxiety and tension, which can cause problems like headaches, chronic stress can really affect your health in many ways like effecting your cardiovascular system, digestive system,  immune system and even effects your mood, mind and mental health. just by relaxing and taking a deep breath, and pretty much center yourself, clear your mind, try to get yourself grounded, and try to feel connected physically and spiritually can really help. Mental health is very important as well as all the other kinds of health. mentally; if you think negative you will feel negative, so by clearing your mind and have set times to relax and collect yourself and even putting your thought and emotions on paper can help with all that comes with the mental issues, physically taking care of you as far as your diet and exercise are extremely important for a healthy lifestyle and can help mentally. There are many things one can do to prevent over stressing or at least manage it. (Chapter 2&3)

I learned some interesting things within these chapters, in discussions i came across a issue i have never really thought about, and that's health in the media. media portrays people so differently and can really confuse people as far as whats good for them, whats acceptable, what we should look like, what our weight should be and really its not all really, alot of it is photo shop to make you look amazing, when in reality these people are just like everyone else, everyone has flaws. they make people think diets are great, they agree that taking this miracle pill everyday will change your life, which makes it hard to figure out if you can or cant trust these advertisements when you have so called doctors involved. but there are ways to figure out what to believe.

I have learned a few words, such as locus of control, psycho dynamic, eustress and homeostasis

I have visited a site that helped me better understand these issues and the real everyday reality of mental health. http://www.mind.org.uk/mental_health_a-z/8034_mental_health_problems
